SIKESTON - Three people from Sikeston and five others from the surrounding area passed the water safety and instructors course conducted at the municipal swimming pool last week by Earnest Vornbrock, Red Cross Water Safety director from St. Louis. Those who passed from Sikeston were: Alfred A. Bach, Charles Berthe and William F. Sikes.

EAST PRAIRIE - Games are just one way the mind is stimulated by the teachers at this summer's Migrant School in East Prairie. Students eagerly participated and responded quickly when they found the right answers.

CHARLESTON - The Mississippi County Sheriff's Department had begun its annual search-cut-destroy campaign of marijuana. Sheriff Avery Hutcheson reported 32 female plants, averaging 10-feet in height, were cut and burned in the western portion of the county Thursday afternoon. The street value of the marijuana was said to be "several thousand dollars," according to Hutcheson.

SIKESTON - Former circuit judge Tony Heckemeyer cruised to victory Tuesday in the Democratic primary for the 8th District congressional seat. Heckemeyer's win sets the stage for a November showdown with incumbent Republican Jo Ann Emerson of Cape Girardeau.

VINCENNES, Ind. - The Sikeston 11-12 year old Bambino Team will represent Missouri in the Bambino World Series in Vincennes, Ind. starting on Saturday. Sikeston , the Missouri State Champions, won the Midwest Plains Regional tournament in Boonville just one week ago today. This earned them the right to go where no Sikeston team has gone before.
