NEW MADRID -- George Carter, 75, died Aug. 9, 2008, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
Born Nov. 29, 1932, in St. Louis, to the late Roy and Dolly Bird Carter, he was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the New Madrid American Legion Post 595, the Lilbourn VFW Post 7183 and the Kewanee Missionary Baptist Church.
On Dec. 3, 1964, at New Madrid, he married Joanna Jackson who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: two sons, Earnest Carter of East Prairie and Stephen "Rooster" Carter of Tunica, Miss.; one daughter and son-in-law, Leigh Ann and Webb Manley of Sikeston; five grandchildren, Callie (Mark) Tilley of New Madrid, Courtney Carter, Anna Manley, Daniel Manley and Garrett Manley; and two great-grandchildren, Noah Tilley and Eli Tilley.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three sisters, Billie Shell, Patsy Hawkins and Charlotte Broyles; and one brother, Frank Carter.
Visitation is scheduled from 5-8 p.m. today at the Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Webb Manley and Tom McCanless will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield.
Pallbearers will be: Mike Robey, James Taylor, Harold Allred, Edgar "Boo Boo" Pipkin, Jerry Sermon and Russell Masterson.
