CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The Southeast Missouri State football team has elected five captains for the 2008 season. Quarterback Houston Lillard and wide receiver Mike Williamson will captain the offensive unit while the defensive captains will be linebacker Nick Stauffer, tackle Nick Ketelsleger and cornerback Kendall Magana.
"It was a very close vote and I think the team did a good job in identifying the leaders on our team," said Southeast coach Tony Samuel. "This group will represent our team and University very well."
Lillard, a senior from Oakland, Calif., will be the starting quarterback after throwing for 1,350 yards in an injury plagued season a year ago. One of his targets will be Williamson, a senior from Arlington, Texas, who was also a captain last season.
Magana, a senior cornerback from Arlington, Texas, was a high school teammate of Williamson at Lamar High School in Arlington. Ketelsleger is a senior defensive tackle from Chino Hills, Calif., while Stauffer is a senior linebacker from Mansfield, Texas.
The Redhawks open the season on Thursday, August 28, when they host Southwest Baptist with a 6 p.m. kickoff at Houck Stadium.
