SIKESTON -- Virgil Ivan Jones Sr., 89, died Aug. 22, 2008, in Cape Girardeau.
Born July 30, 1919, in Okokona, Ark., to the late William Ivan and Stella Robertson Jones, he was a farmer. A veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II, he was a member of the Holly Grove Baptist Church in Cooter.
On Nov. 11, 1939, in Cape Girardeau, he married Sarah Gwendolyn "Billie" Frazier, and she survives of the home.
Other survivors include: one son, Virgil Jones Jr. of Cape Girardeau; three daughters, Nita Brackin of Cape Girardeau, Deborah Burress of Davenport, Fla. and Sara Grombowski of Washougal, Wash.; one brother, Ralph Jones of the state of Utah; one sister, Lilla Fluty of Sebring, Fla.; and six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Arnold Jones; and one sister, Francis Cobb.
Services were held Monday at the Powell Funeral Home in Steele. The Rev. Dave Lewelling officiated.
Burial followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Steele.
