NEW MADRID - A New Madrid man was arraigned today for assaulting an infant.

Larry Murphy of New Madrid was charged Wednesday with first degree assault - serious physical injury. He was to be arraigned today in Division II of New Madrid County Circuit Court before Judge Charles Spitler.

According the probable cause statement the child was taken to Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston on Aug. 29 because the child would not eat and was unresponsive. The child was later airlifted to Children's Hospital in St. Louis where doctors determined the boy had suffered serious physical injuries.

The examining doctor told the investigating officer the child had "several breaks in his leg bone that appeared to be healing." Also the child had a broken rib and a brain injury, which the doctor said may have injured 25 percent of the child's brain and "may never heal."

Currently Murphy is being held in the New Madrid County Jail in lieu of a $500,000 bond.
