NEW MADRID -- Steve and Allie St. Mary celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Aug. 26, 2008, at Golden Living Center in New Madrid, where St. Mary has been a resident for more than a year.
The staff gave the couple a cake, and they served it to friends and caregivers during a party.
When asked the secret to a long, successful marriage, St. Mary said he was lucky enough to find the best woman in the world and even luckier to have her as his wife.
The couple married Aug. 26, 1948, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Madrid where they remained to begin their family. They have four children, Marie, Steve, Betty and Bill.
Once St. Mary retired from working at Noranda Aluminum Inc., he and his wife planned on doing some traveling, working around their home on a few remodeling projects and just enjoying life together. But then St. Mary was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, and the couple's plans were altered. However, the couple remain together much of the day, every day.
Mrs. St. Mary has become an advocate of the National Alzheimer's Association. In 2007, she collected over $6,400 for Alzheimer's research. This year she has already raised more than $9,000, but has set a personal goal of $10,000.
