BENTON -- Sales tax revenues continue to be down in Scott County.
During the regular commission meeting on Thursday, officials reviewed the August sales tax report. Current totals are just over $100,000 lower than they were at the same point in 2007, reported Jamie Burger, presiding commissioner.
"And we haven't even hit the loss," said Commissioner Dennis Ziegenhorn. He was referring to this month's sunset of the half-cent sales tax, originally passed in 2000 to pay for the costs to construct the county jail.
Money in excess of the payment has been used for other law enforcement costs, and would be lost income next year as well.
Commissioners blamed the sluggish economy for the dipping figures. "I just think the downturn is here, too," said Burger.
