SIKESTON -- G.H. Starnes, 83, died Sept. 13, 2008, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
He was born June 3, 1925, in Pinckneyville, Ill., son of the late Homer Gordon and Alta (Daugherty) Starnes Wilkinson. He was a member of First Baptist Church, a self-employed farmer and a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Europe during World War II at Battle of the Bulge. There Sergeant Starnes served as squad leader of a heavy mortar unit and was awarded three bronze stars. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and Shriners.
On May 27, 1944, at Blytheville, Ark., he married Bernadine Gleason and she survives of the home.
Other survivors include: one son, Jim Starnes of Newport Beach, Calif.; one daughter, Jacqueline Brooks of Pasadena, Calif.; four grandchildren, Khristina Starnes Lucas of Austin, Texas, David Brooks and Michael Brooks of Pasadena and Anthony Young of Bernie; and two great-grandchildren, Quentin Lucas and Marly Lucas of Austin.
One son, Gordon Allen Starnes, preceded him in death.
Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Ponder Funeral Home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Ken Mathis, pastor of First Baptist Church, will officiate.
Burial will follow with full military honors in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery.
