Sept. 17, 1948

SIKESTON - Mary Nell VanBibber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Breman VanBibber, was elected by the student body yesterday to represent Sikeston High School in the annual Cotton Carnival Queen pageant.

Sept. 17, 1968

SIKESTON - Shuffit's Nursing Home, located at the intersection of Highway 61 North and Brownspur Road, will have two additions added to the present building to accommodate 48 more patients.

Sept. 17, 1988

DEXTER - Harry Swinger of Dexter received a prisoner of war medal from Maj. Gen. Daniel Schroeder at a ceremony in Poplar Bluff Friday. Swinger was captured in France in 1944.

SIKESTON - Eight prospective Navy chief petty officers were taken for a dousing as part of their initiation for the office. Since there wasn't a nearby ocean for the officers from Southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri, they made do with the Sikeston Car Wash for the Naval tradition of a cleansing of the officer' bad habits.

Sept. 17, 1998

SIKESTON - The national day of student prayer "See You at the Pole" was held Wednesday at area schools. Several students from the Sikeston Senior High School participated in the prayer which was held at the flag pole at the SHS Field House. This year's theme is "For Such a Time As This."

SIKESTON - Christian Jacobs, 13, is being recognized, along with others who have come through the St. Francis Medical Center's rehabilitation unit, in an awards ceremony that honors individuals and organizations who have promoted opportunities and awareness for individuals with disabilities.
