I hope everyone had fun at this year's Cotton Carnival. Thanks to everyone who came downtown after the parade to enjoy the Cotton Heritage Festival in American Legion Square. Many thanks go out to all the volunteers and contributors. Look for us again in 2009.

I've been settling in as the new director for the Historic Midtown Development Group. My thanks go out to everyone who has sent a warm welcome and helped me learn about the rich history here in Sikeston. I'm looking forward to many new ideas and plans here in downtown, and I welcome any questions, comments or suggestions from the public. I'm here to help you enjoy downtown more.

As we look ahead to this year's fall and winter seasons, there are many great events planned for the downtown area. Coming up on Oct. 25, we have the Halloween Family Fun Day in Malone Park. There will be many fun activities and games for kids and adults alike. Then on Nov. 14 and 15, the downtown merchants will host their annual Open House to kick off the holiday season. While shopping in downtown Sikeston, look for this year's limited edition ornament, which features the Malone Park Band Stand.

Construction is still ongoing on our downtown sidewalks. The crew has finished up the stretch along Front Street between Scott and New Madrid streets. They're currently working between New Madrid Street and Kingshighway. Rest assured all of our wonderful Front Street businesses will remain open during this phase of construction. Please be careful when shopping downtown, and look for the orange tape directing you through the construction. We'll be finished soon, bear with us!

All are welcome to attend the next HMDG meeting held at 8 a.m. Oct. 2 at Susie's Bake Shoppe.
