SIKESTON -- James Earl McGarity, 88, passed away peacefully on Sept. 25, 2008, in Sikeston, surrounded by his wife and children.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Grace, along with his children Carl Edward McGarity of Oklahoma City, Ronnie Lee McGarity and wife, Patricia of Racine, Wis., Bobbie Jo McLeod of Sikeston, Debra McGarity Dietrich and husband, Donald of Memphis, Tenn., Denise Darlene McGibony and husband, Robbie of Pananma City, Fla.; and Michael Dean McGarity and wife, Kimberly of St. Louis. He is also survived by his sister, Bobbie McAnulty of Sikeston; as well as 21 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Madison and Myrtle Ruth McGarity; his brothers and sisters, Clarice Lucille Bowden, Herman Carlton McGarity, Elam Edward McGarity, Mary Atha McAnulty, Laura Faye Morphis and Robert Glen McGarity, as well as beloved son-in-law, Michael McLeod.
Born in Russellville, Ark., in 1920, James married Grace Golden in 1941. After his service in the Army and Navy in World War II, James took his family to Michigan, where he worked for 38 years for the Clark Equipment Company.
Upon his retirement, he and Grace spent several years in Brownsville, Texas, before moving close to their family and friends here in Sikeston in 1991.
