COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. -- David Thomas Burns, 59, passed away Sept. 29, 2008, at home following a two-year battle with cancer.
Dave was born on Dec. 30, 1948, in Memphis, to parents Rice P. Burns Sr. and Jacqueline J. Burns.
He is survived by his wife of over 37 years, Becky Wagner Burns; children, Molly Jo and Andrew Watkins, D.J. and Dawn Burns, and Tyler Burns; and grandchildren, Sophie Jo Watkins and Alexandra Burns. In addition, he is survived by his stepmother Amy Lee Burns; brother Rice P. Burns Jr.; stepsister Linda Bell; Uncle Joe Burns and his wife Rosemary; Uncle Buddy Burns, and a loving extended family of in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Dave began his career in Memphis with Malone & Hyde in 1977 as an internal auditor and held various positions within the company, finishing his tenure as vice president of Sales and Development. Most recently, he has been a devoted employee of AutoZone, serving as the director of auditing since 2002, and is a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors. He holds B.S. degrees in education and business from Southeast Missouri State University.
He will be missed by his family, colleagues at AutoZone and good friends.
Though Dave's body has been donated to help further medical research in hopes that a cure for cancer will someday be found, a visitation with the family will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Friday at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Ave. in Memphis. A memorial service will follow at 6 p.m.
