SIKESTON - Joe Berthe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Berthe, celebrated his 12th birthday Sunday afternoon with a wiener roast at his home.

Oct. 2, 1968

SIKESTON - The United Fund Drive's goal for eight member agencies in Sikeston has been set at $41,940 for 1968-69. Pat Lea is drive chairman while Sam Harbin will serve as co-chairman.

Oct. 2, 1988

SIKESTON - Bizarre is an appropriate way to describe the weather area farmers had to face this summer. Bootheel crop producers had to battle high temperatures and sporadic rainfall for the duration of the summer. After drought, rain hurt the cotton crop.

BENTON - Four wooden bridges in central Scott County were causing problems. One on County Road 349 has been closed for a year and the other three had weight limits of 3-6 tons. But those bridges aren't causing trouble anymore. The four bridges have been replaced this year under the federal Off-System Bridge Replacement Program administered by the Missouri Department of Transportation.

SIKESTON - Christy Stacy is the October Calendar Girl for the Standard Democrat. She is the daughter of Jo Ann Hale of Sikeston and John and Delores Sanders are her grandparents.

MINER - "Celebrate Jesus, Celebrate" is the theme for the Miner Baptist Church Fall festival Sunday. Everyone who attends Sunday school will have a chance to dunk the pastor, Mitch Jackson, and associate pastor of music and youth, Michael Nickelson.
