DEXTER -- Six Sikeston residents sustained serious injuries while three Richland R-1 students and their bus driver received minor injuries Thursday when a sport utility vehicle slammed into the passenger side of the school bus in Stoddard County.
According to Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at 3:30 p.m. at the Grayridge intersection of AH (Webber Street) and Highway 114 as the driver of the northbound Richland R-1 school bus, Kent L. Kassinger, 43, of Dexter failed to yield to the westbound SUV driven by Elisha D. Brown, 22, of Sikeston. Brown's vehicle then struck the school bus and traveled off the road.
Brown and his passengers, Otis W. Cannon, 52; Oreal Pitts, 49; and Quitman E. Walker, 56, all of Sikeston were taken by ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Brown's other passengers, Alonzo Jones, 22, of Sikeston was transported to Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston while Brittany L. Brown, 22, of Sikeston was air evacuated to Saint Francis Medical Center.
Kassinger was taken by private conveyance to a local hospital while the three injured students, Adam M. Chafin, 6; Olivia L. Chafin, 6; and Jessica M. Hill, 13, all of Essex were released to their parents.
Dexter Fire Department's Extrication Team assisted in removing two of the injured parties from the SUV.
Six ambulances were on the scene, along with the medivac helicopter and several Highway Patrol units and members of the Stoddard County Sheriff's Department.
