Oct. 13, 1948

MATTHEWS - Fire destroyed 49 bales of cotton and damaged the rear loading dock of E.P. Coleman Company's gin when a blaze of undetermined origin started in a stack of bales Friday.

SIKESTON - The Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce received approval today for two additional stars in the community betterment five-star program, according to Lee Shell, chairman of the betterment committee.

SIKESTON - Debbie Stieffermann, a secretary at Sikeston City Hall, registered Kathy Stinnett of Sikeston to vote Wednesday afternoon. Anyone wishing to register can do so at the city hall or county clerk's office.

SIKESTON - Citizens will enjoy the benefits of a "pocket park" in downtown Sikeston. City officials along with Mark Walker of Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., inspected the park, located between the city administration building and the telephone company facility off Center Street. Improvements to the area were paid for by the telephone company.

ST. LOUIS - Sikeston native Olen A. Vanover was promoted to master sergeant at the U.S. Army Recruiting Battalion in St. Louis.

CAPE GIRARDEAU - Daniel Dial, 13, of Sikeston, placed first in the 12-13 age group of the District 8 Punt, Pass & Kick competition held Sunday in Cape Girardeau after placing first in the event at Sikeston. Dial was one of 11 competitors in his age group Sunday competing to qualify in the state competition, which is to be held at a later date in St. Louis.
