CAPE GIRARDEAU - A Hayti man pled guilty Tuesday to charges of drug trafficking.
Tyrese L. Stephen, 26, pled guilty to one felony count of distributing five grams or more of cocaine base and one felony count of possessing with intent to distribute five grams or more of cocaine base.
At the plea Stephens admitted that on March 13, a cooperating individual purchased 5.66 grams of crack cocaine (cocaine base) from him for $500 in Kennett.
On April 2, a traffic stop was conducted of a vehicle being operated by Stephens on Highway 412 in Pemiscot County. Based on previous arrangements for Stephens to deliver a quantity of cocaine base to a cooperating individual in Kennett, law enforcement officers stopped Stephen's car and searched it for cocaine base. During the search, law enforcement officers discovered a bag containing cocaine base under the dash of the vehicle.
Stephens admitted he had obtained a half ounce of crack cocaine from an individual for $300 earlier in the day. Stephens also acknowledged that he obtained a half ounce of crack cocaine on a daily basis, which he distributed in Hayti and Kennett.
He now faces a maximum punishment of 40 years imprisonment and a $2,000,000 fine on each count. Sentencing is set for Jan. 20, 2009.
