CHARLESTON -- Becky Lynn Stewart, 36, died at 1:18 a.m. Oct. 20, 2008, at the St. Louis University Medical Center.

Born February 6, 1972 in Flint, MI to Betty Jones Temples of Dexter, she moved to Dexter in 1974, and following completion of her seventh grade year moved to Paris, Tenn., where she graduated from Henry County High School in 1990. She received a bachelors of science in elementary education from Murray State University, then attended Southeast Missouri State University, where she received a masters of arts in administration and then specialist in education degree in May 2001. In 1994, Becky began her career in education in Bloomfield and remained in the Bloomfield school system until 1998. During that time, she worked in several areas: a third grade teacher responsible for all curricular areas, at-risk classroom teaching mathematics and reading to third, fourth and fifth grade students, kindergarten teacher responsible for all curricular areas, middle school athletic activity sponsor, assistant to principal in implementing the summer school program, elementary building representative, and chairwoman of the MSIP Differentiated Instruction Committee. In August 1998, she moved to Charleston and was employed as the assistant principal of Hearnes Elementary School, where in 2000 she was named to her current position as the principal.

Always seeking to improve the educational setting for students and colleagues, Becky was instrumental in submitting grant proposals for Bloomfield and Charleston School systems. She held memberships in CTA, International Reading Association as a Reading Specialist, the MO State Association of Elementary School Principals, the SEMO Association of the Elementary School Principals, and the Leadership Academy. As a member of the Miner Baptist Church, she assisted in the AWANAS youth program, and was a member of the Charleston Junior Study Club, the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and served on the Board of Directors of the Shining Light Mission.

On June 14, 1997, she married Shane Stewart, who survives of the home of Charleston.

Survivors in addition to her husband include: one son, Jake Thomas Stewart of the home; one daughter, Madelynn Michelle Stewart of the home; her parents, Bill and Betty Temples of Dexter; one sister and brother-in-law, Michelle and David Terrell of Sikeston; a brother-in-law, Jeff Stewart of Kennett; her maternal grandmother, Jerry Davis of Dexter; and her in-laws, Nick and Ada Robinson of Kennett and Ken Stewart of Springfield.

She was preceded in death by her great-grandmother, Fleta May Jones.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Miner Baptist Church in Sikeston, where services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday. Mitch Jackson, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Dexter City Cemetery under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston.

Pallbearers will be the Missouri State Highway Patrol Honor Guard.
