SACC looks to grow and spread its message

Sunday, November 2, 2008

I hope everyone had a safe and fun Halloween I want to thank one last time our Halloween Window painting partners the Elks Lodge for their sponsorship again this year. The windows were great and promoted an important message.

As the Chamber moves into November we are busy with our Annual Membership Drive that will take place the week of Nov. 3. SACC volunteers will be calling on new businesses in the area promoting the chamber and its activities.

Some of you may wonder what the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce does. The chamber has been in existence for over 75 years, providing a wide of variety of services that change over the years according to the business climate. One of the biggest services we provide is the delivery of information not only to our area residents, but to outsiders coming to our communities to conduct business or just visit.

All referrals are directed to our chamber membership, because we know our members and the kinds of products and services they provide. It is important for any chamber's reputation to take care of the referrals properly and we are no exception. We know that when we make a referral to a SACC member the consumer will receive the best service. More times than not it is the local Chamber of Commerce that an outsider will look to for information about an area and they look at chamber referrals for product and services as a sort of seal of approval. I know myself when traveling to other areas or conducting business in other communities I call the chamber because it is their job to know their community.

If SACC receives a complaint concerning one of our members we contact them with the specifics of the complaint and ask them to address it, this of course is all confidential.

This information can be very beneficial to a business owner who may not be aware of a problem that has occurred and can often quickly rectify the situation. The vast majority of our businesses have no problems and when one does occur it is usually an isolated incident that can be addressed. This intervention by the chamber can often prevent the unhappy consumer from taking the next step and filing a complaint to the Better Business Bureau where a file may be opened on the case.

Other services we provide include working with area businesses concerning expansion and retention. We have access to resources for the business that is looking to expand or the business that in these tough economic times to finds itself trying to retain or maintain what they have. It may involve drafting a revised business plan, looking for new financing, or accessing government programs not previously needed. While we are not the experts on all these items, we have easy access to these experts for our members and will be glad to make those contacts.

The Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce offers many more services, unfortunately there is not enough room in this article to cover them, but if you are interested in what the chamber can do for you contact us at 573-471-2498 or go to our Web site at www.sikeston.net.

We are looking forward to a successful membership drive and want to welcome our new members since last month's article: Reflection Handwash, BA Promotions and Marketing, Bootheel Recycling, Gill Group, and Used to Be Mine Consignment. We appreciate your support of our area chamber and the services we provide.

From the SACC staff Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and check our calendar of events at www.sikeston.net for holiday event information.
