ULLIN, Ill. -- The Shawnee Community College Saints ran their record to 4-0 Wednesday night, defeating the Forest Park Highlanders 92-91.
The Saints fell behind early as offensive rebounding by Forest Park helped the Highlanders build a lead, but Shawnee battled back to lead 47-41 at the half. The second half was like a heavyweight fight with both teams exchanging blows but the Saints used a suffocating defense in the final three minutes to help get the win.
Down six points with less than three minutes remaining, the Saints were sparked by the defensive play of Stanley Johnson and won the game on a three-pointer by Sylvester Sipp.
"It was a total team effort tonight and every last one of these guys contributed," said Shawnee coach John Sparks. "It was a great game and great atmosphere. We will enjoy it tonight and prepare for who is next."
Eric Valentine came off the bench to lead the Saints with 20 points and six rebounds. Rayco Bryant added 19 points and 9 rebounds. Scott County Central products Caleb Johnson and D.D. Gillespie both contributed valuable minutes in the contest. Their final stats were unknown at press time.
