Man in custody for child abuse

Thursday, November 20, 2008

CARUTHERSVILLE - A father is in custody for abusing his 5-year-old child.

An investigation began Tuesday after deputies were called to the South Pemiscot Schools concerning the abuse of a child. According to Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell, the child had been "slapped several times in the face, bit on the face a couple of times and even kicked in the side of the chest area by the father." Authorities believed the abuse occurred Monday evening.

Timothy J. Shivers, the child's father, was later located at a residence near Holland. He was taken into custody and is charged with first degree endangering the welfare of a child. Shivers remains in the Pemiscot County Justice Center in lieu of a bond of $50,000.

Greenwell said additional charges may be filed as physical and forensic evaluations are completed in Cape Girardeau.
