Portageville moves to 2-0 on the young season

PORTAGEVILLE -- Two days into the season and two victories on the board for the Portageville Lady Bulldogs on the hard court as they knocked off the Malden Lady Wave Tuesday evening 73-19.

For the Lady Bulldogs it was an offensive explosion as they outscored Malden 29-4 in the second half.

Portageville head coach Eric Ellerbrook was pleased with the victory and said that his team worked as a unit for the win.

"I thought our girls came together and played as a team tonight," Ellerbrook said. "They passed the ball well, they worked hard on their defense, but the main thing tonight was that they played as a team on the defensive end."

Brittney Walker and Jaleea Drake were once again solid for the Lady Bulldogs as Walker scored a game-high 26 points and had seven rebounds and six steals while Drake chipped in with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Both had three blocks in the win.

As for the Lady Wave, first year head coach Brian Vent said that his squad has to get back to the basics in order to become successful on the court.

"We're a young team," said Vent. "We're behind in our fundamentals. Being a first year coach it's hard to get the girls to believe in your system. It's going to take a couple of years for that to get down. We've got some talent, we're just going to have to develop it."

Vent said as long as his squad stays positive they'll be alright, but said that they'll have to take it one game at a time.

Latrilla McCoy led Malden (0-2) with 13 points and three steals. Kyeon Stone added six rebounds in the loss.

Up next for Portageville (2-0) is the South Pemiscot Lady Bulldogs on Monday at 4 p.m. in the Bulldog Classic in Steele.
