Born Jan. 16, 1934, in Greene County, Ark., to the late Jesse and Alma Hayes, he was a U.S. Army veteran and had worked for several years in Sikeston.
Survivors include: one daughter, Jessica of Cape Girardeau; five sisters; Omagene Knotts and Judy Miller of Corning, Ark., Irene Parker of Flippin, Ark., Paulette Hayes of Datto, Ark., and Sharon Brown of Bella Vista, Ark.; and three grandsons, Joseph Hayes of Sikeston and Darius and Zane of Cape Girardeau.
He was preceded in death by a son, Richard "Rick" Hayes, in 1980; four brothers, Carrel Hayes, Howard Hayes, Lonnie Hayes and Homer Hayes; and one sister, Gertrude Rhea.
Visitation is scheduled from 5-7 p.m. today at the Ponder Funeral Home where services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday. His nephew, Michael Rhea, will officiate.
Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery.
