Risco falls in Campbell tourney

Seventh, eighth grade Bulldogs get wins over Dexter

CAMPBELL -- The No. 7 seed Risco Tigers fell to the No. 2 seed Campbell Camels in the Campbell Tournament on Tuesday night 82-55.

"We just never could recover after the first quarter," Risco head coach Brandon Blankenship said. "We're better than what we showed. Campbell came out and played very well. Ross Carter had a good game but we've got to have some other players step up."

Carter, who was the only Tiger to finish in double figures, ended up with 18 points.

Risco's next game will be against the No. 6 seed Puxico Indians on Thursday.

Eighth grade basketball

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Bulldog eight grade basketball team defeated the Dexter Bearcats 49-23 Tuesday night at the Sikeston Junior High Gymnasium Tuesday night.

The leading scorers for the eight grade Bulldog's were Markeith Bratcher (22), Vashaun Ruffin (11), and Blake Flannigan (8).

The eight grade team will return to action Thursday with a home game against Poplar Bluff.

Seventh grade basketball

SIKESTON-- The seventh grade Sikeston Bulldog's basketball team defeated the Dexter Bearcats 64-32 Tuesday night at the Sikeston Junior High Gymnasium.

Leading scorers for the seventh grade Bulldogs (3-0) include J.T. Jones (18), Peyton Boyd (16), and Zach Harrison (7).

Seventh grade coach Derek James felt his team has another quality outing Tuesday.

"It was a good game for us," James said. "We tried out a new press and I feel it was very effective for us. We were able to speed up the pace of the game and create turnovers."

James continues to be pleased with the effort his team is putting forth.

"We have had great effort in every game now," he said. "Our boys are really playing hard."

The seventh grade Bulldogs return to action next Tuesday at Charleston.


Delta 57, St. Vincent 32

DELTA -- Taylor Smith scored 20 points as the Delta girls basketball team opened the season by hammering St. Vincent 57-32 on Tuesday.

The Bobcats, a Class 1 state runner-up a year ago in the last of Randy White's seven seasons, were playing their first game under new coach Mark Verticchio.

Delta outscored St. Vincent 37-12 in the first half.

Jodi Menz poured in 16 points for Delta, while Katie Brucker added eight points.

St. Vincent was paced by Amanda Wengert with 16 points.


Chaffee 68, Greenville 52

CHAFFEE -- The Chaffee Red Devils won their season opener Tuesday, 68-52 over the Greenville Bears.

Taimen Taylor netted 30 points to lead the Red Devils over Greenville.

Michael Rutherford chipped in 17 points for Chaffee (1-0).

Woodland Tournament

WOODLAND -- Perryville held on to defeat Delta 61-59 in four overtimes to advance in the consolation bracket in the Woodland Invitational.

The Pirates, who will play for the consolation title, were led by Brent Roth with 15 points. Tyson Brown netted 12 and Wade Leible added 10 points.

Teddy May poured in 22 points to pace the Bobcats, while Tyler Keys added 12 points for Delta.

Zalma held off a furious third quarter by Oak Ridge and advanced to the semifinal round with a 80-69 victory.

Justin Stotts led the Bulldogs with 25 points, while Stephen Simmers added 23, including five 3-pointers.

The Blue Jays were paced by Garret Light with 24 points. Brett Thomas netted 21 and Stephen Wright chipped in 16 points.

Perryville will play the winner of the Oak Ridge-Woodland game Friday in the consolation finals.

Thursday's semifinals will feature top-seeded Scott City against No. 4 Meadow Heights and No. 2 Leopold against No. 6 Zalma. The finals are Friday.

JACKSON -- The Jackson wrestling team opened the season with a pair of dominating victories.

The Indians recorded 11 pins in an 83-0 victory against New Madrid County Central, and six more in a 76-3 victory against Hancock.
