CHAFFEE -- The Kelly Lady Hawks basketball team started out the season with a victory on Thursday evening as they defeated the Chaffee Lady Devils on the road by a final score of 71-38.
Debra Hall led the Lady Hawks with 33 points and Londyn Backfisch added 10. Kelly head coach Rod McQuerter said that Thursday's game was similar to every single season opener in that the girls had to get things started for the season.
"The girls came out with a positive attitude," McQuerter said. "They played with intensity and I'm glad they came out and communicated well."
Up next for the Lady Hawks is the winner of the Oran/Scott City game in the Chaffee Lady Devils Invitational. The game is scheduled for Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
EAST PRAIRIE -- The Bobcats overcame a slow start to defeat East Prairie 58-46.
Jodi Menz led Delta (2-0) with 29 points and Taylor Smith added 21.
SCOTT CITY -- The Rams never led as they fell to the visiting Blue Jays.
Katie Hogan led Scott City (1-2) with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Stephanie Essner netted 12 points and grabbed nine boards.
CAMPBELL -- The Risco Tigers advanced to the consolation finals of the Campbell tournament by defeating the Puxico Indians 84-77 on Thursday evening.
For the Tigers, Ross Carter led the way as he scored 20 points, including two 3-pointers. Zack Williams added 18 points in the victory.
Risco head coach Brandon Blankenship said that his squad played as a unit in the win.
"Everybody on the bench scored and played a significant part in the game," said Blankenship. "It was a total team effort tonight."
Up next for the Tigers is the consolation championship against the East Prairie Eagles tonight at 5:30 p.m.
MARBLE HILL -- Fourth-seeded Meadow Heights pulled off a decisive upset win over top-seeded Scott City Thursday night in the semifinals of the Woodland Invitational.
The Panthers rolled past the Rams 72-52 to advance to the championship game.
Dustin Hubler poured in 22 points and Derrick Wilfong netted 20 to lead the Panthers. Zac Hotop added 11 points.
The Ram's were led by Cody Page with 15 points.
In other semifinal action, Darren VanGennip went off for 40 points to lead second-seeded Leopold over sixth-seeded Zalma 73-46.
Dustin Thiele chipped in 10 points for the Wildcats.
Stephen Simmers led the Bulldogs with 10 points.
In the consolation bracket, Oak Ridge knocked off Woodland 67-51.
Stephen Wright paced the Blue Jays with 18 points. Brett Thomas added 15, Garret Light netted 13, and Logan Mangels chipped in 12.
Kyle Reynolds scored 19 points for the Cardinals, while Josh Hahn added 12.
Meadow Heights will square off against Leopold tonight in the championship. Scott City will take on Zalma for third place and Perryville will face Oak Ridge in the consolation final.
