SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Bulldog wrestling team defeated the Dexter Bearcats 41-30 in the team's first dual match of the season at the Sikeston Field House Thursday night.
With Sikeston dominating the lower weights and Dexter controlling the heavier, Thursday's contest came down the the heavyweight match-up of Sikeston's Josh Carlyle and Dexter's Zach Lacy, two wrestlers relatively new to the sport. The match was 35-30 in Sikeston's favor as the heavyweights took to the mat, Lacy needing to pin Carlyle to give the Bearcats the victory.
Carlyle spoke in terms of the team effort following the deciding match.
"Everyone has worked really hard in practice," Carlyle said. "I'm just thankful to be on this team and to have been in the situation to secure that win. I just hope we can keep things going."
Dexter coach Rick Schwab noted that his team had no reason to hang their head after Thursday's match.
"I'm very pleased with the way we came out tonight," Schwab said. "The effort was definitely there this evening. I couldn't have asked for anymore from them. The match came down to that heavyweight match like we knew it could."
Sikeston coach Kent Gibbs noted his team was glad to win a dual meet, the first in some time.
"It's exciting for a change to be in a dual meet," Gibbs said. "It has been a while since we have won a dual meet. It came down to that heavyweight match somewhat. We are very glad to win the meet."
Gibbs was very pleased with effort, but noted that technique and conditioning are areas still in need of improvement.
"Our effort was very good tonight," he said. "We made some mistakes. We are young and are going to make those mistakes. We also got a little tired at times, so we will continue to work on conditioning as well. But, I was very pleased with our effort and determination."
Gibbs noted that this win was key to redeveloping the confidence of the wrestling program.
"It's like how our football program was here, when you get beat for a while it gets easier to accept," he said. "We you are trying to get a program established, a win early sure helps and we were able to do that tonight."
