NEW MADRID -- A New Madrid man is facing a first degree murder charge for the death of a toddler.
Larry D. Grant, 41, was arraigned Monday in Division II of New Madrid County Circuit Court before Judge Charles Spitler. A cash or surety bond of $500,000 was set by Spitler.
The New Madrid County Sheriff's Department received a call at 4:12 p.m. Thursday in reference to a nonresponsive infant at an apartment on Pinnell Street in New Madrid, according to Sheriff Terry Stevens.
The infant, Rashod Lofton, 2, was pronounced dead at the scene by Jimmy McSpadden, New Madrid County coroner.
Grant was arrested Friday evening following an investigation by the New Madrid County Sheriff's Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol and New Madrid City Police.
The next court appearance for Grant is scheduled on Dec. 29.
As of press time, he remained in the New Madrid County Jail.
