PORTAGEVILLE -- James Alvin Vires, 68, died Dec. 24, 2008, at Portageville.
Born Feb. 13, 1940, at Hornersville, to Zettie Vires of Chicago and the late John Roosevelt Vires, he was a construction worker, from which he retired. He then worked as a farmer.
On Oct. 19, 1961, in New Madrid, he married Helen Havener who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: four sons and two daughters-in-law, Scottie Vires, J.J. and Tammy Vires and Kenneth Vires of Portageville and Andy and Christine Vires of Marston; two daughters and sons-in-law, Theresa and Benny Birdwell of Portageville and Debra and Robert Watkins of Essex; one sister, Dorothy Vires of Bowling Green, Ky.; three brothers, Frank Vires of Morehouse, Tommy Vires of Chicago and Joe Vires of the state of California; and 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Jim Vires, Jerry Vires and Sonny Vires; and two sisters, Joyce Hudgens and Ann Havener.
Visitation is at 6 p.m. today at DeLisle Funeral Home in Portageville where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Bruce White will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Portageville Cemetery.
