COMMERCE -- Herschel O'Dell Gilpin, 84, died Jan. 7, 2009, in a farming accident near Oran.
Born July 3, 1924, in McClure, Ill., to the late David and Thelma McClenahan Gilpin, he was raised by his aunt and uncle, William and Ruth Etherton. He was a self-employed farmer in the Commerce area. He was a U.S. Marine Corps World War II veteran serving two years in Polius, Okinawa and Guadal Canal with the First Marine Division. He was a member of St. Paul Methodist Church in Commerce and the Morley Masonic Lodge No.184.
On Sept. 9, 1948, at Piggott, Ark., he married Martha Louise Sanders, and she survives of the home.
Other survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, David and Kay Gilpin of Commerce; one granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Melinda and Randy Grace of Commerce; one grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Brian and Krissy Gilpin of Commerce; one great-granddaughter, Addison Grace; one great-grandson, Andrew Grace; two great-stepgranddaughters, Paige and Hannah Grace; and one half sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and John Ray of Cameron Park, Calif.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Alma Ruth Burford; and one half brother, Richard Gilpin.
Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City, where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Jim Norris will officiate.
Burial with full military honors will follow in the Oakdale Cemetery in Commerce.
