JACKSON -- The Sikeston Bulldogs seventh and eighth grade programs each picked up victories on the road Monday evening in Jackson. In the seventh grade game, Sikeston won 38-26 while in the eighth grade contest the Bulldogs won 33-18.
The seventh grade Bulldogs had an impressive first quarter where they took a 12-6 lead. They built upon the lead in the next two quarters, outscoring their opponent 21-10 in the second and third quarters, building a lead big enough to withstand a fourth quarter comeback by the Indians.
The inaugural seventh grade season provided a 7-0 season for first-year head coach Derek James.
"That's quite an accomplishment," said James of his squad going undefeated in their first season as a program. "The kids worked hard all year long and they deserve it."
Peyton Boyd led the Bulldogs with 13 points while JT Jones scored seven.
Eighth Grade
Sikeston 33, Jackson 18
In the eighth grade game, the Indians never could get anything going against the Bulldogs as they were outscored in all four quarters. Sikeston scored 12 in the first and seven in each of the remaining three quarters.
"Jackson is a much improved team," said eighth grade head coach Kevin Self. "We played pretty well on the road. We weren't real crisp offensively but defensively we played a very good game."
Markeith Bratcher led the eighth graders with nine points including a 3-pointer while Tyler Neal and Rayshaundre Jackson each scored five in the win.
Ninth Grade
Sikeston 57, Poplar Bluff 17
POPLAR BLUFF -- The ninth grade Sikeston Bulldogs squad moved on in the Poplar Bluff tournament Monday evening by defeating the Poplar Bluff Mules 57-17. For the Bulldogs a big first half set the tone for the remainder of the victory.
Eldridge Gibson scored 16 to lead Sikeston in the win while Terry Jamison, Keldon Warfield and Kil'Ron Coleman each scored eight.
Head coach Chris Sarakas said that his squad came out with good energy which provided what the Bulldogs needed for the tournament victory. Sikeston will play Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. against Twin Rivers.
Girls Basketball
Dexter 66, Kennett 22
KENNETT -- The Dexter Lady Bearcats rolled to 13-0 on the season with a 66-22 win over Kennett Monday night.
Dexter jumped out to a 22-5 first quarter lead and increased the lead to 38-14 at the half. The Lady Bearcats then sealed the game with a 22-8 third quarter, leading the Lady Indians 60-22 after three quarters.
Dexter was led by Katelyn Heil's 25 points. Cathryn Heil added 12 and Jill Temples pumped in 10 for the Lady Bearcats.
Dexter will be back in action Thursday when they travel to Caruthersville to take on the Lady Tigers.
Portageville 64, South Pemiscot 17
STEELE -- The Portageville Lady Bulldogs steam-rolled the South Pemiscot Lady Bulldogs on Monday night as they went on to a 64-17 win.
Brittney Walker led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points. Jeleea Drake chipped in with 12 points and 13 rebounds while Courtney Chamberlain added 10 points and had nine steals.
Portageville (13-1) will be off until Jan. 19 when they travel to Campbell to take on the Lady Camels.
