POPLAR BLUFF -- The eighth grade Bulldogs had a few problems early on in their match-up with the Poplar Bluff Mules on Wednesday night but a strong rest of the game proved to be the difference.
Poplar Bluff held a slim 6-4 lead in a tight first quarter with the Mules pressure defense getting the better of the Bulldogs.
"This bunch gave us tons of pressure," Eighth grade head coach Kevin Self said. "And we had trouble with it from the beginning."
That all changed in the second quarter when Sikeston put up 17 points to Poplar Bluff's 7.
"Once we found our stride and took care of the ball and adapted to the speed of the game, we started playing well," Self said. "I think that has been our best three quarters we've played all year. [Poplar Bluff] was a quality team."
The Bulldogs kept up their pace throughout the second half outscoring the Mules 30-14 to finish out the game.
Markeith Bratcher led Sikeston with 22 points.
The eighth grades' next game will be next Wednesday when they begin the Cape Central 8th Grade Tournament against the No. 4 seed Jackson. Sikeston is ranked No. 1 in the tournament.
