Alanna Downey plays with Pogo, a black and white Border Collie mix; and Sable and Mellie, two black Labrador Retrievers, at her home which doubles as Alanna's K-9 Rescue Mission in rural East Prairie. The stray puppies have been staying with Downey and were transported to a rescue mission in Minnesota over the weekend.

EAST PRAIRIE -- When a thunderstorm struck at 2 a.m. last week, Alanna Downey was so worried about the dogs staying in pens outside her home, she brought them indoors.

And following January's ice storm, Downey found a dog lying in a ditch, brought him to her home and nursed him back to health.

She has many more stories like these. Over the past year, Downey has been bringing stray and abused dogs to her rural East Prairie home and nursing them back to health. Her passion has since led to the formation of Alanna's K-9 Rescue Mission, which she runs out of her home.
