Boy's Player of the Year: Porter wraps up remarkable career for SHS

Sunday, April 5, 2009

SIKESTON -- Remarkable is the only word to describe senior Michael Porter's final year with the Sikeston Bulldogs.

Porter brought his storied high school career to a close with an impressive 2008-2009 season. Porter averaged 21.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this past season, while he was able to record 70 steals as well. Porter led the Bulldogs to a 24-4 record, a 86-85 victory over the highly touted Scott County Central Braves in "The Game," and a district title over their arch rival, the Bulldogs of Notre Dame, before the eventual Class 4 state champion St. Francis Borgia knocked Sikeston out in the quarterfinals.

"Michael was such a tremendous part of our success this season," Bulldogs head coach Gregg Holifield said. "It's not just his numbers, but his leadership and intangible qualities."

Sikeston High School principal Tom Williams echoed Holifield's sentiments.

"Michael has been a leader on the court and on campus for our students," Williams said.
