Residents hope to promote pride with Ward 4 Cleanup Day

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

SIKESTON -- It is a small beginning but one organizers hope will lead to big improvements.

On Saturday, the Westend Community Betterment Association is asking area residents and volunteers to join them for the Ward 4 Community "Cleanup Day." At 8:30 a.m., they will meet in the vacant lot at the corner of Ruth and Branum to pick up trash block by block.

Agnes Mason, a member of the association, explained as the group spoke with Ward 4 citizens, one concern continually came up - trash in their neighborhood.

"That is when we decided to have a clean up day," she said. "This is a starting point as far as community betterment. We feel that it will send a message in the neighborhood that someone cares enough to go out and spend time picking up trash."

People do care about the neighborhood, Mason said. Committee members have talked with the neighbors and met with various church groups who have agreed to participate. The city of Sikeston and BRI have offered assistance, too.
