Despite rain, cold and now, blistering heat, work continues to progress on the expansion of New Madrid riverfront's riverwalk. Rob Shelton works to place stones in one of the five observation spots with benches planned along the walk which will take visitors from the Riverfront Park to the observation deck. The 1,485-foot extension of the brick walkway by the Corps of Engineers also includes two observation platforms, two parking areas and 10 light bases with wiring from light bases to two control panels. Mark Broughton, a District civil engineering technician who is overseeing the project, said work is about 30 percent ahead of schedule and should be nearing completion by the end of July. R.L. Persons Construction Inc. of Poplar Bluff is the contractor for the project.
