SHS athletes will participate in ImPACT tests

Sunday, August 23, 2009

SIKESTON -- For the last several years, Sikeston High School athletes have chosen on an individual basis whether or not to participate in a testing program that measures concussions.

This year, entire teams from the district are being tested under the Immediate Post-concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing program, or "ImPACT," through a subscription with ReStart of Missouri Delta Medical Center.

"While ReStart has offered ImPACT testing for area athletes since 2004, I encouraged the school district to take a more active role and purchase a subscription for the software so that it could easily be installed on multiple computers to facilitate testing," said Laura N. Dennis, ReStart certified athletic trainer for Sikeston High School.

Dennis said the Sikeston Booster Club recognized the need for proper concussion management of Sikeston athletes in grades 7-12 and agreed to provide financial support. Also, the MDMC Foundation showed support by paying for the other half of the first year's subscription.
