SHS ready for district tournament

Sunday, November 1, 2009

FARMINGTON -- The Sikeston Bulldogs will make their way to Farmington on Monday evening for Class 2 District 1 soccer action. First up for the No. 4 seeded Bulldogs, is the No. 5 seed Perryville.

The two clubs met twice in the regular season with Sikeston taking both games. Sikeston head coach Derrick Long said that things change once the regular season comes to a close and the district tournament comes into play.

"We've beat them twice," said Long of his first round opponent Perryville. "Anytime you get into the district tournament though you have to forget about the regular season. Anybody can beat anyone."

Long said that the Pirates do have a strong offense but in the two Sikeston wins in the regular season, Perryville fell behind early.

"It put them on their heels a little bit," Long said of the Pirates regular season troubles against the Bulldogs. "We'll have to try to get ahead of them quick. We need to get an early goal because they do have some guys that can put it in the net and they may lock it down on defense and make it a long night for us."
