BLOOMFIELD -- The Portageville Bulldogs used a last-second shot in overtime to defeat Hayti 70-68 in the quarterfinals of the Bloomfield Christmas Tournament Monday night.

With the score tied at 68-68 with 5.1 seconds remaining in overtime, the Bulldogs inbounded the ball to Fred Treadwell who went the length of the floor and hit a five foot runner as time expired to propel Portageville into the semifinals tonight against Kennett.

The game was back-and-forth for much of the first half as the teams went into the locker room at halftime tied 29-29. After Hayti built a 40-39 lead after three quarters, Portageville seemed to have the game well in hand with a 53-45 lead with just under three minutes left to play.

The Indians battled back and tied the game at 59-59 when Keenan Williams hit a 15-foot jumper with 18 seconds remaining. Hayti then stole the Portageville inbounds pass but missed a shot, followed by a Portageville miss on the other end. However after Hayti rebounded the Bulldog miss, Craig Rodgers was fouled, giving him two free throws with two tenths of a second remaining. But Rodgers missed both free throws, giving Portageville new life.

Rodgers redeemed himself in overtime, hitting two free throws to put Hayti ahead 65-61 but two straight baskets by Treadwell tied the game again. Jake Young then put back a missed shot, putting Portageville ahead 67-65 with one minute remaining. After each team made one free throw apiece, Rodgers stuck back a missed shot for Hayti, tying the game at 68-68 with 5.1 seconds remaining, setting up Treadwell's heroics.

Treadwell led Portageville with 22 points while Jake Young added 15 to go along with his 10 rebounds.

Doriyon West had 18 points and 7 rebounds to lead Hayti while Rodgers and Williams each finished with 15.

Portageville will face Kennett tonight in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m.

Dexter 68, Richland 58

The Dexter Bearcats set up a rematch of last year's semifinal game with Bernie with a 68-58 win over Richland in the quarterfinals on Monday night.

The Rebels came into the game with a plan of keeping Dexter's Alan Flannigan under wraps but the Bearcats' supporting cast stepped up in the first quarter, led by Brandon Stoker. The 5-10 guard scored 10 points in the first quarter as Dexter built a 17-11 lead that increased to 34-27 at halftime.

Richland closed the gap to 48-44 late in the fourth quarter but a 3-pointer by Jon Bowman and a layup by Flannigan put the Bearcats up 53-44 after three. Dexter led by as much as 18 (66-48) in the third quarter before Richland made a late run at the Bearcats to cut it the final of 68-58.

"The third quarter and early fourth quarter I really thought we played pretty well," Nichols said. "We just didn't close it out really well."

Despite Richland's efforts, Flannigan led Dexter with 27 points and 7 rebounds. Stoker finished with 17 points and Jon Bowman added 12 to go along with his 7 rebounds.

Dexter will now face Bernie in the semifinals tonight at 6 p.m. Last year Bernie defeated the Bearcats in the semifinals 68-41.

"They handed it to us here last year in the semifinals so hopefully we'll play them better," Nichols said. "They've got a lot of offensive weapons so we'll have our hands full."
