BLOOMFIELD -- For a second it looked as if Richland and Bloomfield were headed to overtime in the fifth place game of the Bloomfield Christmas Tournament Wednesday night. Richland's Ryan Kleffer and Mac Thornton had other plans.
After Bloomfield's Garrett Rice hit a driving layup to tie the game at 48-48 with under five seconds remaining, Kleffer grabbed the ball and threw a pass to a streaking Thornton on the other end of the floor for a game-winning layup with one-tenth of a second remaining, giving the Rebels a 50-48 win.
"It was chaos," Richland coach John Walker said of the final play. "When we got fouled that last time we thought it was two shots and I'm arguing with the refs then I see Mac swoop by and hit the layup. It had nothing to do with me, it had to do with the players."
The final play was just a brief glimpse of the entire game as the teams traded leads throughout. Bloomfield held a 24-21 lead at halftime but Richland came out and retook the lead 35-33 after three quarters.
"It was a very physical game and that is what we talked about at halftime, we were going to have to match their physical intensity," Walker said.
Richland focused their attention on Bloomfield standout Leighton Hensley, and the Rebels' Jesse Brown was able to contain him for most of the game, holding him scoreless in the second and third quarters.
"He gets all the dirty work," Walker said of Brown. "He can't really jump much but he just gets in there and grinds them. He's a hard-nosed kid."
For Richland, the game appeared to be the Drew Thornton to Mac Thornton show as Drew hit Mac with pinpoint passes time after time for easy layups. Drew Thornton finished the game with a triple-double, 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
"When he is on the floor we're a different team," Walker said of Drew Thornton. "We're more confident. Him and Mac have been playing together for so long."
Mac Thornton finished the game with 19 points and eight rebounds to lead Richland (7-2) while Hensley led Bloomfield with 15 points, including nine in the final quarter.
