COLUMBIA -- Sikeston wrestlers Blake Angle and Josh Carlyle saw their state tournament come to an end on Thursday, as both lost their first two matches.
Carlyle, a senior, lost his first match by fall to Demarco Kemp of University City in the 285 pound division. Kemp came into the tournament with a perfect 46-0 record but Carlyle stayed alive until he was pinned after 3:18.
Carlyle then took on Kevin Estell of Belton in the wrestlebacks and lost a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to end his state run.
Angle, who finished sixth last year as a freshman, lost his first match by fall (2:55) to Joe Barnes in the 112 pound division. Angle then tried to stay alive in the wrestlebacks but lost a close 8-5 decision to Demarcus Gurlly of Normandy.
In Class 2, Dexter's Daniel McClendon is the only Bearcat wrestler still alive after the first day. McClendon won his first match 6-4 in the 189 pound division, defeating Justin McGee of Harrisonville. He will take on Dustin Williams of Benton today.
Cody Stevens dropped his first match in the 145 pound division, losing by fall to Tyler Brittingham of Pleasant Hill. Stevens then dropped his wrestleback match by fall to Lee Johnson of Moberly.
Ryan Vanover also lost his first two matches in the 130 pound division. Vanover fell to Dakota Goll of Cameron by fall in his first match and then lost his wrestleback match by fall to Tahlor Fowlkes of Moberly.
Wesley McCollough lost by technical fall to Davis Keleher of Moberly in his first round match in the 160 pound division. The senior then lost a major decision in wrestlebacks to Chayse Adams of Lafayette (St. Joseph).
Zach McCoy lost his first match to Drew Benner of Fulton by fall in the 135 pound division and lost by fall to Josh Thomson of Odessa in the wrestleback.
