NMCC pulls off only upset in first round of Class 3 District 1 girls tourney

Charleston wins easily to move into the semifinals

KENNETT -- The No. 3 seeded Scott City Lady Rams ended the East Prairie Lady Eagles' season on Saturday with a 67-45 win during the Class 3, District 1 tournament in Kennett.

A slim 10-8 lead after the first quarter led to Scott City doubling the Lady Eagle's second quarter total. The Lady Rams put the game away in the fourth quarter after they outscored East Prairie 24-13.

Katie Hogan had a game-high 28 points to go along with her five rebounds and three assists in the win while Stacey Heisserer added 12. Melanie Lacey grabbed 13 rebounds while Stephanie Essner had eight points, eight rebounds and four assists for Scott City (19-6).

East Prairie (14-9), the No. 6 seed in the tournament, was led by Grace Swann's 14 points. Jennifer Nicholson added 11 and Mandy Knupp had 10.

Central 71, Kelly 62

The New Madrid County Central Lady Eagles pulled off the only upset of the day against the No. 4 seeded Kelly Lady Hawks' on Saturday with a 71-62 win.

NMCC, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, rode a comfortable 36-24 halftime lead to the win.

Jasimane Flennoy led the Lady Eagles with 22 points while Benisha Childress and Tameika Williams added 19 and 16 respectively. Karen McGloson chipped in 10.

The Lady Hawks (17-10) were paced by Londyn Backfisch who had 22 points. Kayla Hicks chipped in with 17.

NMCC (14-10) will take on the No. 1 seed Kennett on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Charleston Lady Bluejays dispatched of the Malden Lady Wave on Saturday with a 74-53 win.

An 11-point first quarter advantage quickly grew to a 39-23 lead at the half. Charleston outscored the Lady Wave in each of the four quarters.

Jerquawnda Sherrell had a game-high 27 points while Kasuela Cooper added 23.

Charleston (18-5) will take on Scott City on Tuesday in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m.

The Kennett Lady Indians had no trouble with the Carutersville Lady Tigers on Saturday morning with a 56-20 victory.

Kennett built a 19-6 lead after the first quarter that eventually led to a 26-point advantage at halftime.

Jerica Williams and Brittany Williams each had 12 points apiece for the Lady Indians.

Tamora Fonda led Caruthersville with 11 points.
