KRCC's telethon marks 30th year

Sunday, March 14, 2010
This coming weekend will bring the 30th annual Kenny Rogers Children's Center Telethon to our community. By all accounts, this may well be the biggest and best telethon ever.

And that's saying a lot!

In many ways, it seems unreal that this annual fundraiser is about to celebrate 30 years. From some very humble beginnings, through countless growth spurts, the telethon has become an important tradition in Sikeston.

For two full days on Saturday and Sunday, the telethon brings enough activities to attract the entire community. And when the smoke clears on Sunday afternoon, literally hundreds of thousands of dollars will be raised to help improve the Center offering a wide range of service for special children.

I have had the distinct privilege of having a 20-plus year love affair with the telethon and all of those involved. Along with everyone in the community, I have seen this major event grow and mature and prosper through the years.

I well remember when a $60,000 goal was beyond our wildest dreams. I remember the emotions when the telethon posted its first $100,000 event. Ditto for the first $200,000 event.

This year - with an amazing goal of $500,000 - hang onto your hats.

But don't confuse the telethon with some endless display of talent all performing to raise funds. That's just one important aspect of the event. There are literally dozens of activities under way this year that should attract a crowd regardless of your interest.

Hundreds if not thousands of volunteers - some working year-round - help to coordinate the events and provide an entertaining show for those in attendance and the television audience. But the important ones are those who raise funds essential to the ongoing operation of the Center.

Mark your calendar for next Saturday and Sunday. Visit the Sikeston High School Field House for some fun events and consider the financial needs of the special children who receive services at the Center.

If I can promise one thing, it is this - you won't be disappointed. And the progress of the children will more than make your day.

It may even change your life!
