David Backfisch and Lee Enderle with Denny's Ornamental Iron place a new fence around the Hunter-Dawson Cemetery in New Madrid on Thursday afternoon. Backfisch said the fence has received lots of compliments from area residents. "It is neat when a neighborhood is interested in preserving of history," he said. The new fence is being funded by Leroy Nunn and the local Masonic Lodge along with money set aside in a special fund for the cemetery, which is one of the oldest cemeteries in the community with graves dating back to the 1850s. On Tuesday, New Madrid residents will be asked to continue an additional general revenue tax which among other things provides funding to help preserve and maintain cemeteries in the community.
