NEW MADRID -- Area health departments are banding together to ensure they are able to keep providing their health services despite the sickly economy.

With the assistance of a $84,910 Rural Health Network Development Planning Grant, the New Madrid, Scott, Mississippi, Stoddard, Pemiscot and Dunklin county health departments are in the process of forming a 501c3 nonprofit organization, according to Jayne Dees, administrator of the New Madrid County Health Department.
