SIKESTON -- A 19-month-old was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle on Friday.

Around 2 p.m. Friday, the Sikeston Department of Public Safety was contacted by Missouri Delta Medical in Sikeston in reference to a small child in the emergency room, with injuries sustained from a motor vehicle accident.

When officers arrived on the scene, they began questioning ER staff and witnesses.

"Reportedly a subject was in her vehicle on Watson Street and struck a 19 month old girl as she backed out of the driveway," Sgt. Jim McMillen, DPS public information officer said in a news release. "The driver was apparently unaware the child was near her vehicle as she began backing."

Others at the scene immediately took the child to MDMC to treat her injuries, which McMillen described as serious. Soon after, the child was flown to St. Louis Children's Hospital for treatment, where she is believed to be in critical condition.
