SIKESTON -- Finishing second as a team in Wednesday's district tournament at Sikeston, the Dexter Bearcat's strong showing was led by a trip to the finals by doubles partners Dylan Acevedo and Tyler Miller.
Taking on David Bennett and Eric Downey from Windsor the Dexter pair took an early match lead with an easy 6-0 win in the first set.
A switch must have went off in the boys from Windsor as things stopped rolling the Bearcats way as Windsor took the second set 6-3.
Unable to find a second wind in the final set, the Bearcats' pair would fall 2-6 to take second in the tournament.
"I guess we just lost focus," Miller said. "They got the momentum and took it. You just can't give up on a team even if you win the first set.
"I can't hit the ball any harder than I was. They were just holding the racket up and returning it."
Earning third-place Dexter's other doubles team of Brauck Burge and Dylan Mann took down Windsor's other squad, brother Jacob and Steven Tanner.
The strong showing in doubles plus Kyle Willis and Logan Crowley both advancing to the second round in singles, gave the Bearcats enough points to finish easily in second with 24 points, but still well behind first place Windsor who had 32.5.
"This is my fifth year coming over here and this is the best we've done," Dexter coach Dennis Keith said. "We've got fourth twice and then this one so I was really proud of the guys. They did well."
