Sikeston's Strom falls in semifinals of singles tourney

SIKESTON -- Thursday's district tennis tournament brought a disappointed close to the season for Sikeston's Stuart Strom.

Coming into the district tournament ranked No. 1 and a favorite to go to state, Strom was upset in the semi-finals by No. 4 ranked Eric Aberg from Arcadia Valley, the eventual winner of the singles side of the tournament.

"Strom's loss was disappointing, but the type of player that he played against just kept his racket on it at all times," Bulldog's coach Russ Dial said. "That's Stuart's worse type of opponent. A guy that just keeps his rack up and is like a brick wall."

After Strom, a senior, took the first set 6-3, Aberg came back to win the second 6-4. With things tied up after two the match went to the super tie-breaker, which Aberg won comfortably 10-7.

Sikeston's only other netter on the singles side, senior Landon Hampton, advanced to the quarterfinals where he fell to Windsor's Matt Aiello.

"Landon did very well today," Dial said. "He actually went further than he was expected to. He played the No. 3 seed and lost, but he played well today.

"He probably played as well as he has all season."

In doubles play, neither Bulldogs team were able to advance out of the first round. Jacob Alsup and Jahkil Valentine lost to Potosi 6-7, 6-0, and 10-6 while the duo of Josh Bill and Zachary Thacker fell 1-6, 2-6 to Festus.

The Bulldogs finish the tournament in sixth place out of 13 teams, finishing one point behind fifth-place Festus with 10 points.

Though Dial had hopes of state for his squad this season, he looks back on this season with pride.

"The boys tennis team did a great job this year," he said. "They stayed on tasks all year long, even the five seniors that I had, at the end of the season they still stayed on task.

"It was just a wonderful season for me as a coach. These guys are great."
