SHS boys second, girls third

HILLSBORO -- The Sikeston boys and girls track teams battled wet and cool conditions at the Class 3, District 1 track meet on Saturday, with the boys placing second and the girls third.

In the boys side, Farmington won the event with 119 points with Sikeston, the defending Class 3 state champions, a close second at 112.5. New Madrid County Central finished tied for 10th with 24 points.

The top four finishers in each event advanced to the sectional meet, which will be held at Farmington on Saturday, and Sikeston saw plenty of athletes qualify.

Sikeston had only two first place finishes on the day, taking first in the 800-meter relay (1:30.96), while Ismail Johnson placed first in the 400-meter dash (49.88).

The Bulldogs had numerous second place finishes including a runner-up finish in the 1,600-meter relay along with Alex Clark in the 110-meter hurdles (15.56), Tanner Bryant in the 300-meter hurdles (41.19), Trey Lewis in the long jump (21-7 1/2), Darryl Howard in the triple jump (44-3 3/4) and Josh Carlyle in the shot put (48-9).

Ray Clark placed third in the 200 (23.42) and fourth in the 100 (11.49) while Martez Evans took fourth in the high jump (6-0), Howard third in the long jump (21-5 1/2), Lewis third in the triple jump (44-0) and Jarian Wims third in the shot put (46-10 1/2).

NMCC's G'Darius Stevenson won the 200-meter dash (23.02) and finished second in the 100-meter dash (11.32).

Girls

In the girls side, Sikeston finished with 76 points trailing only Festus (108) and Herculaneum (94). Dexter finished eighth (34.5) while NMCC was 11th (26).

Sikeston had three first place finishes, including taking the top spot in the 800-meter relay (1:48.11). Tyanne Townsend took first in the 100-meter dash (12.91) while Vonterria Applewhite took first in the 200-meter dash (27.16).

Sikeston finished second in the 400-meter relay (51.23) while Jalen Peet was second in the long jump (16-11) and triple jump (33-8) and sophomore Betsy Borgsmiller was the runner-up in the high jump (5-2).

Townsend also finished fourth in the long jump (15-9) while Applewhite placed fourth in the 100-meter dash (13.18)

NMCC's Brittany Johnson was second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.93) and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (49.90) while Dexter's Taylor Martin was third in the 100 (13.14) and fourth in the 200 (27.89).

NMCC also finished fourth in the 400-meter relay (52.85) and the 800-meter relay (1:51.72).
