SIKESTON -- Like several youths, 16-year-old Mariah Schott is eagerly anticipating attending camp this summer.

"Only two more weeks," the Kelso resident said. "I just love it -- it's my favorite time of the year."

But Mariah doesn't attend just any camp. She attends the Muscular Dystrophy Association's camp, a six-day event for children suffering from muscular dystrophy.

Mariah said she enjoys the camp because she gets to connect with other children like her, who suffer from MD. At Scott City High School, she's the only student with the diagnosis.

Cost for the camp is steep -- it's $800 per child. And fundraisers such as the Stride and Ride for MDA, set for Saturday, help children like Mariah go to camp, as well as provide other types of assistance for MD patients.

Stride and Ride for MDA, an established event, will take place in Sikeston for the first time this year.
