CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Chaffee's summer league baseball team kicked off their season Tuesday night with a come-from-behind victory over host Cape Girardeau Junior Legion.

Trailing 6-5 going into the seventh Chaffee put up eight runs on Cape, seven with two outs, to take a decisive 13-6 win.

"It was good we came through there with two outs," coach Joe Bickings said. "That was the big thing. All you had to do in this game was put the ball in play and good things are going to happen."

Alex Crowe got things started for Chaffee in the end, getting hit by a pitch to put the tying run on first.

An errant pick-off attempt would move Crowe over to third, allowing him to score on a Jared Walker double to left.

Walker would eventually score as the go-ahead run when pitcher Alex Davie hit a two-out drive to the center field wall that resulted in a triple.

Chaffee went to score six insurance runs before a fly out to the second baseman ended the inning.

Cape wouldn't go quietly, however, as they attempted to rally, eventually loading the bases with two outs.

Unfortunately for Cape's squad, Justin Modglin, who already had an inside-the-park-home run, would strike out looking to end their chances at a comeback.

"Our bottom of the order came through for us and that's always big," Bickings said. "Once they come through and we get the lead-off guys going again we're going to be tough at the plate."

Getting a good look at Cape's starting pitcher Thomas Crocetti was the key to his team's offensive outburst Davie said.

"That was the third time through we got to see him so we were used to him then," he said. "It's good to know we can come back with two outs and do that."

Besides getting the go-ahead hit, Davie also picked up the win, pitching the last two innings in relief after starting the game at first base.

He allowed no runs or hits while striking out three and walking four.

As a team Chaffee collected 10 hits in the contest with Davie, Walker and Andrew Terhune leading the team with two apiece.

The two squads also played a second game on the evening. In the contest Cape bested Chaffee 14-3 in five innings.

Chaffee will get back in action Thursday, when they participate in the Charleston Wooden Bat Tournament, playing Poplar Bluff Legion at 4 p.m.
