SPRINGFIELD -- The Cooter Wildcats ended their season on a high note, defeating St. Elizabeth 4-1 to claim third place in the Class 1 State Baseball Tournament on Thursday morning.
Cooter broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth when Dustin Franklin doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning. Franklin advanced to third on a bunt hit by Jessee Rayburn and then scored on a wild pitch to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Cooter then added some insurance runs in the top of the sixth, plating three. With one out, Rayburn reached on an error and advanced to second on a single by Patrick Ward. Seth Childers then doubled down the left field line, scoring Rayburn and advancing Ward to third. Zack Watkins then singled to right, scoring Ward and Corey Thornton, who pinch ran for Childers, giving the Wildcats a 4-0 lead.
That would be all Jonathan Boone would need as the Wildcat hurler tossed a complete game, allowing only one run in the seventh. Boone gave up three hits and one walk while striking out nine to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Cooter finished the season with a 23-7 record, bettering their fourth place finish from a year ago.
